Tambillo is a town in the La Paz department in the South American landlocked state of Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

Tambillo is the central place of the canton Tambillo in the district ( Bolivian : Municipio ) Laja in the province Los Andes . The village is located at an altitude of 3865  m, thirty kilometers southeast of Lake Titicaca , from here the wide plain of the Bolivian highlands extends to the southeast beyond El Alto and Calamarca .

Tambillo is located on the Bolivian Altiplano between the Andes mountain ranges of the Cordillera Occidental in the west and the Cordillera Central in the east. The climate of the region is semi-humid and a typical time of day climate , in which the mean temperature fluctuations during the day are more pronounced than during the year.

The mean average temperature of the region is 9 ° C (see Batalla's climate diagram), the monthly averages fluctuate only slightly between 6 ° C in July and 10 ° C in November and December. The annual precipitation is around 600 mm, the monthly precipitation is between under 15 mm in the months June to August and between 100 and 120 mm from December to February.

Transport network

Tambillo is 52 km by road west of La Paz , the capital of the department.

From La Paz, the paved road Ruta 2 leads west to El Alto and another five kilometers in a north-westerly direction. Then the Ruta 1 branches off to the southwest and leads via Laja to Tambillo and on to Guaqui on Lake Titicaca and to Desaguadero (Bolivia) on the border with Peru .

From Tambillo you can reach the town of Catavi after twelve kilometers via a side street in a north-westerly direction .

Due to the historical population development, the region has a high proportion of Aymara population, in the municipality of Laja 97.2 percent of the population speak the Aymara language .
