The white-spotted filefish ( Cantherhines macrocerus ) lives in the tropical west Atlantic from Bermuda , the Bahamas and the Florida coast to the coast of Brazil and the Caribbean .

The fish have the typical diamond shape of the filefish. Their coloring is variable. Young animals and females are blackish, covered with hazy white spots. The back of the body can be more or less yellowish or ocher in color. Female fish often turn light gray. Males are usually strikingly red-brown or orange in color. They don't have a stain pattern.

The 40 centimeters long animals usually live in pairs.

White-spotted filefish eat algae , sponges , coral polyps and other bottom-dwelling invertebrates .
