The eye spot puffer fish ( Canthigaster solandri ) lives in the tropical Indo-Pacific from East Africa to the Line Islands and Tuamotu , north to the Ryūkyū Islands , south to New Caledonia and Tonga , to Hawaii . The population on the coasts of the Philippines , Indonesia , New Guinea , Queensland and Belaus differs in color and was previously regarded as a separate species ( Canthigaster papua ). In the Red Sea it is replaced by Canthigaster margaritata .

The eye spot puffer fish becomes 11.5 centimeters long. Its basic color is brown. Numerous small blue dots, white on the belly, cover his body. A few short blue lines radiate out from the eyes. There is an eye spot at the base of the dorsal fin .

Way of life
Inhabits sheltered rocky reefs , lagoons and outer reefs and lives above all over scree floors, between corals and under overhangs at depths of one to 36 meters. The fish live mainly in pairs but also in small groups. Eyespot canthigaster feed mainly of filamentous green, filamentous and crusty growing red algae , corals, echinoderms , bristle worms , crustaceans , molluscs and bryozoans . The eye-spot puffer fish is imitated ( mimicry ) by the filefish Paraluteres arqat .
