Caprino is a small Swiss village on the southern shore of Lake Lugano and the northern slope of Monte Caprino and is part of the Lugano district of Castagnola-Cassarate-Ruvigliana .

geography

To the west of the village is the state border to the Italian exclave Campione d'Italia . Politically, Caprino belongs to the city of Lugano and is best reached by ship (3 km as the crow flies). There are two landing stages: San Rocco and Cantine di Caprino.

history

Caprino, already part of the municipality of Castagnola , together with it since 1972 belongs to the municipality of Lugano . In Caprino there was a quarry for the buildings of Lugano, lime kilns and cold cellars for the storage of wines, sausages and cheese. The cellars were built by the Lugano patrician families in the 17th and 18th centuries. The wood from the forest was cut regularly and transported to the lake by boats. The town of Cavallino west of Caprino owes its name to Mr. Pietro Cavallino, owner of the house and the cellar built here.
