Carex satsumensis is a sedge art . It is a relatively small representative of the genus of sedges ( Carex ) and the only species in the Japonicae section . It grows on sandy soils and isnativeto Taiwan , Japan , the Philippines and Vietnam .

The rhizome of the species is elongated and creeping. The stems grow in loose clusters, are triangular and measure 7-20 × 0.15 cm. The leaves of Carex satsumensis can be longer or shorter than the stems. The bracts are linear and shorter than the long cylindrical, spiked and 3–8 × 1–1.7 cm large inflorescence . The latter's numerous flower-bearing spikes are monoezoic , dense, open and elongated. They grow from a cover sheet with a trained female flower, sometimes a few basal ears are branched. The male part of the spikelets is 2–3 mm in size and has four to five flowers. The female part is densely covered with numerous flowers. The male husks are pale yellow to pale brown, lanceolate, 2.5–3 mm long, membranous and have a sharp tip. The female husks are light yellow to light brown, 2–2.5 mm long and ovate. They are membranous, have a midrib, translucent edges and a pronounced tip. When ripe, the tube is light yellow-brown, open, slightly longer than the husks and elongated, lanceolate. It is obtuse triangular, 2.5–3 mm long, membranous and has two raised lateral veins as well as numerous fine veins abaxially . Adaxial it is without veins and lighter, its base tapers abruptly to a short stalk, the tip is elongated-wedge-shaped, while the mouth is truncated at an angle. The ripe nut of the species is light yellow, oblong and obtuse triangular in shape. It is about 1.5mm tall and has a pointed base and a rather blunt end. The stylus is basal slightly thickened, the scar is in three parts.

Carex satsumensis has an East Asian species range and occurs in Taiwan , Japan , the Philippines and Vietnam .
