The Carl-Kraemer Primary School is an art emphasized all-day school in Berlin district of Gesundbrunnen in the Mitte district . It was founded in 1951 and is named after the German animal rights activist Carl Kraemer .

School profile

The focus of the Carl Kraemer Elementary School is on the art department. This focus is implemented, among other things, in projects that are developed in collaboration with artists and museum experts. The project “(Stories) across layers” was exhibited from the end of 2008 to the beginning of 2009 in the Museum of Prehistory and Early History .

The school's teaching concept combines year-homogeneous teaching in the main class with cross-year teaching in so-called "learning ateliers", in which content on basic school subjects is worked out together with children from a higher or lower class.

Children with special gifts and talents have the opportunity to take part in an "expert course" once a week. A team of educational professionals supports children with special educational needs when they attend classes.

Location and surroundings

The Zechliner Straße belongs to the Soldiner Kiez in Berlin-Gesundbrunnen and is located in close proximity to the green corridor along the Panke . The Soldiner Kiez is still considered a social hotspot with high unemployment. In 2016, over two thirds of the children in the neighborhood lived in families who received transfer benefits such as unemployment benefit II . Accordingly, around 80% of the almost 490 students at the Carl Kraemer Elementary School are exempt from teaching materials (as of 2015). Around 90% of the students have a non-German language of origin (as of 2018). The Carl Kraemer Primary School is responding to this special situation, among other things, with targeted language and reading support for all pupils that goes beyond the general curriculum.

Furthermore, the school takes in the "Youth social work at schools in Berlin" in part, sets various violence prevention programs to and cooperates with the existing since 1999 in the neighborhood neighborhood management . In the 2016/17 school year, the school subject “Social Learning” was introduced for all grades, in which the children learn and improve social skills.

history

The school building was built in 1913/14 according to plans by Ludwig Hoffmann and was initially used by the 292nd community school for girls and the 299th community school for boys from October 1914. In 1939 the community schools were converted into the 31st and 32nd elementary school in the Wedding district . In January 1943, both schools were relocated to different alternative quarters and the building at Zechliner Strasse 4 was converted into an auxiliary hospital. It was not until 1948 that the schools could return here. Now boys and girls were taught in mixed classes for the first time.

Another school reform in 1951 split the elementary school into a primary and a high school. The 26th elementary school was founded and three years later was named “Carl Kraemer Elementary School”. The upper classes formed the 8th Oberschule, later “Peter-Henlein-Oberschule”, which continued to operate at the same location until it was closed in 1992 due to a decline in the number of pupils.

The actor Harald Juhnke attended the community school or elementary school here during part of his school days.

architecture

Similar to the Rudolf-Wissell-Grundschule , which was also designed by Ludwig Hoffmann, the Carl-Kraemer-Grundschule consists of a teacher's house on the street front and a three-winged, four-story classroom behind. This serves as the inner block development of an apartment block and is surrounded on all sides by apartment buildings. The gym was arranged between the passageways of the center wing.

The facades of the building in the inner courtyard are unadorned and simple, whereas the representative facade of the three-storey teacher's residence is reminiscent of Potsdam town houses . Between the second and third floors, relief strips show children playing and Berlin bears with school bags.

The building ensemble is a listed building.

Temporary closure

The Carl Kraemer Primary School made headlines at the beginning of 2018 when it had to temporarily close due to mold and a damaged ceiling suspension. Classes were moved to various other buildings.
