Carl Schurz Medal (Erftstadt)

The Carl Schurz Medal is an award named after Carl Schurz , with which the city of Erftstadt honors citizens or associations who are particularly committed to the social or cultural area of ​​Erftstadt on a voluntary basis. It is the city of Erftstadt's highest award.

Minting and use of the medal

On 2 March 1979, was Kreissparkasse Euskirchen the 150th birthday of Carl Schurz one from sterling silver existing coin out, which was marked with a design by painter and graphic artist Manfred Bruck from Erftstadt. The 40 mm diameter and 25 g heavy medal shows on the front the head of Carl Schurz and his life dates as well as the inscription: Where freedom is, there is my fatherland and on the back Gracht Castle with the outer bailey and a split inscription. Above the picture: Carl Schurz's birthplace and the name C. Schurz, below the picture the outer bailey Schloss Gracht.

At the opening of the Carl Schurz exhibition in the branch of the Kreissparkasse in Liblar on March 7, 1979, the Carl-Schurz-Kreis, which had compiled the exhibits, received one of the medals in recognition of their services in putting together the exhibition.

The medal was sold for several years by the Kreissparkasse Euskirchen in all branches at a price of 45 DM (+ VAT). The city of Erftstadt took over the remaining stock in 1982 to use it as an award.

The award was presented for the first time at the New Year's reception in 1983 by the city director and mayor, in the following years in 1987 and several times on other occasions. Since 1990, with few exceptions, the award has been made at the New Year's reception.
