Carl Adolph Heinrich Hess

Carl Adolph Heinrich Heß (* 1769 in Dresden ; † July 3, 1849 in Wilhelmsdorf, today City of Vienna , district of Meidling ) was a German animal painter .

Hess formed himself partly under Kloß, partly by studying according to old masters and, especially after traveling through Russia, Hungary and Turkey as an attentive observer, achieved a mastery in the representation of horses. Meyers Konversationslexikon from 1888 praises his horse depictions with the following words: "Few other painters have shown such a deep understanding of the horse races in their connection with people and country as Hess, whose pictures are also excellent in relation to backgrounds and human figures."

Residing in Vienna since 1808, where he became a teacher at the art academy, Hess died on July 3, 1849 in Wilhelmsdorf near Vienna.
