Carl August Benjamin Siegel

Carl August Benjamin Siegel (born April 27, 1757 in Dresden ; † October 15, 1832 there ) was a master builder and professor of architecture in Leipzig and Dresden.

life and work

Siegel learned architecture in Dresden as a student of Friedrich August Krubsacius and Gottlob August Hölzer . This was followed in Leipzig from 1785 as a teacher for architectural drawing at the art academy, which later became the Academy of Fine Arts and is now the College of Graphics and Book Art . He then became a full professor and was head of the architecture department until 1823. He also worked as a university master builder in Leipzig. After 1823 he became a professor and head of the building school at the Dresden Art Academy, today's Dresden University of Fine Arts .

In 1792, Carl August Benjamin Siegel published drafts for garden staffages for the landscape park of Machern Palace under the title “Six painterly views from the garden to Machern near Leipzig” . This was followed in Leipzig by the Place de Repos on the Promenade, which was opened in 1793 and is now Dittrichring 15, and in 1797–1805 the Paulinum College ( Vorderpaulinum ) at Universitätsstrasse 3–5 was rebuilt. In 1817 he and Friedrich Weinbrenner redesigned the Old Theater in Leipzig in a classicist style.

Lübbenau Castle

Siegal built together with Christian Friedrich Schuricht 1796-1802 in Liebstadt Castle local to Castle Kuckuckstein in neo-Gothic style around. From 1815 to 1820 he was the architect for the classical Lübbenau Castle , an unusual two-wing complex, the wings of which are at an obtuse angle to each other, so that an impressive, opening courtyard side with a meadow in front was created. Around 1820, the orangery was built opposite the castle according to his plans. In 1825, the Brückner House on Bautzener Platz, corner of Alaungasse, was built in Dresden according to his designs.
