Wilhelm Hegenscheidt (born October 9, 1823 in Altena , Westphalia , † March 1, 1891 in Gleiwitz , Upper Silesia ; full name: Carl August Wilhelm Hegenscheidt ) was a German entrepreneur in the metalworking industry.

Life and work

Hegenscheidt inherited 6,000 thalers from his father . This inheritance and other money borrowed from his brothers enabled him to found a wire, nail and chain factory not far from the Klodnitz Canal near Gleiwitz in 1852 . In 1857 he built the first wire rod mill in Upper Silesia. He introduced modern, cold-made steel ropes and nails . Thanks to his advertising campaigns , he gained an important market position. As the demand for his products increased steadily, the production was continuously expanded. In 1865 he bought the Baildonhütte near Katowitz from John Baildon , which turned out to be extremely profitable. In 1887, together with his competitor Georg von Caro, he founded Oberschlesische Drathwerke AG , since 1889 Oberschlesische Eisenindustrie KG ( Obereisen for short ) in Gleiwitz, which at that time was the largest company in Upper Silesia.

Hegenscheidt had six children. The son Rudolf Hegenscheidt (1859–1908) took over the business after the death of his father (1891) and successfully continued the company. The son Wilhelm Hegenscheidt (1861–1895) was an iron entrepreneur based in Ratibor . The son Friedrich Hegenscheidt (1870–1954) was a lawyer , district administrator and member of the German Reichstag .
