Carl Büttger , also Karl August Friedrich Büttger (born August 29, 1838 in Freden or Lamspringe , Kingdom of Hanover , † June 17, 1919 in Holzminden ), was a German landscape and genre painter from the Düsseldorf School and a drawing teacher .

Life

Büttger was the son of a chief forester. He first visited the Josephinum in Hildesheim, before he devoted himself to painting in the "studio of an artist in Hanover". From 1856 to 1858 he studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy in the classes in the Antikensaal. There were Karl Müller and Christian Köhler his teachers. He then worked in the studio in Hanover for two years. He worked for more than half of his life as a drawing teacher in Holzminden, from 1876 at the building trade school . In addition, since 1879 he was a high school teacher at the Ducal High School there and at the secondary school for girls. He made it from the high school teacher to the position of senior teacher to the position of professor. One of his students was the later painter Fritz Mackensen . His landscapes were often idealized motifs from the Weserbergland . For the auditorium of his school he created a large landscape painting depicting the Amelungsborn monastery , the former seat of the grammar school.

On the occasion of his retirement in 1913, Büttger was awarded the Knight's Cross, Class II, of the Order of Henry the Lion .
