Carl Bischof (born June 4, 1812 in Dürrenberg , † June 23, 1884 in Dresden ) was a German mining technician and smelter .

Life

Bischof studied chemistry , physics and geology in Berlin in 1829 and 1830 , then worked on the ironworks of Count von Einsiedel zu Lauchhammer and studied again in 1839 at Berlin University.

With a particular fondness for technical work, he had already built a small steam car in 1829 , which ran on ordinary routes and was probably the first of its kind to move on German soil. In 1839 he invented the gas-evolving furnaces, which in further training were intended to bring about a complete redesign of the combustion systems in many branches of industry, and which found general application in particular in smelting works.

Known through this and several metallurgical work, he was appointed by the decree of Duke Alexander Carl von Anhalt-Bernburg on February 22, 1844 as smelter at the Mägdesprung ironworks near Harzgerode and later appointed to the mountain ridge. He is one of the pioneers of cast steel .

In 1856, Bishop was a founding member of the Association of German Engineers (VDI). His election as chairman for the year 1858, he rejected due to lack of time. In March 1863 he was given retirement for health reasons, and in 1884 he died in Dresden.
