Carl E. Heiles
Carl Eugene Heiles (born September 22, 1939 in Toledo , Ohio ) is an American astronomer .
Heiles graduated from Cornell University with a bachelor's degree in engineering in 1962 and received a PhD in astrophysics from Princeton University in 1966 . Since 1966 he has been a professor at the University of California, Berkeley . In 1973 he became a Sloan Research Fellow .
In 1983 he was visiting scholar at the University of Grenoble , 1969/70 at Cornell University and in 1990 at the University of Colorado Boulder .
He deals with radio astronomy and interstellar matter (role of diffuse gases). In 1982 he was involved in the discovery of the first millisecond pulsar PSR B 1937 + 21, with a rotation time of 1.55 milliseconds.
With Michel Hénon he is known for the Henon Heiles model, which is important in chaos theory .
He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . In 1989 he received the Dannie Heineman Prize for Astrophysics .
