Carl Ferdinand Becker (born July 17, 1804 in Leipzig , † October 26, 1877 in Plagwitz near Leipzig) was a German organist and music writer .

Life

Becker was born in Leipzig in 1804 as the son of a doctor and writer. As a student he attended the St. Thomas School in Leipzig . His teachers Johann Gottfriedschicht (1753–1823) and Friedrich Schneider (1786–1853) trained him as a musician . From 1820 to 1833 he was a violinist in the Gewandhaus Orchestra . In 1825 he became organist at the Petrikirche and in 1837 at the Nikolaikirche . In 1848 he became a teacher for organ and music history at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Leipzig . In 1834 he worked for the Neue Zeitschrift für Musik and was one of the founders of the Leipzig Bach Society in 1850. He died in 1877 near Leipzig.
