Carl Goering

Carl Theodor Göring (born April 28, 1841 in Brüheim , † April 2, 1879 in Eisenach ) was a German philosopher and chess master .

Life

Goering was the only son of a rich landowner. After graduating from school in Eisenach in 1859, he studied philology in Jena and for three semesters in Berlin . In June 1863 he received his doctorate in Jena. Although he was able to lead a materially carefree life as a private scholar due to his inherited wealth, he worked temporarily as a high school teacher in Berlin, Bonn and Gotha . In the spring of 1872 he settled in Leipzig , where he was appointed extraordinary university professor for philosophy from 1877 . As a philosopher he was a representative of critical empiricism and positivism .

In 1872, he contracted a rheumatism , which lasted for many years and which in his obituary as the cause of the depression and paranoia was called, he fell into in the following years. He died of suicide while on vacation with his parents .

Göring also gained importance as a strong German chess master who was successful in tournaments in the 1870s : 4th place in Krefeld 1871, 3rd place in Leipzig 1871, 3rd place in Altona 1872, 2nd place in Leipzig 1876. At the tournament in Leipzig in 1877 (Göring was fifth) he managed to win against Adolf Anderssen . Göring was one of the initiators for the establishment of the German Chess Federation and one of its founding members in Leipzig in 1877. From 1870 he was one of the strongest players of the Leipzig chess society Augustea and at times its vice-president. His best historical rating was 2534. This he reached in July 1878. For a time he was 12th in the world rankings.

The Göring Gambit in the Scottish Game is named after him: 1. e2 – e4 e7 – e5 2. Ng1 – f3 Nb8 – c6 3. d2 – d4 e5xd4 4. c2 – c3 .
