Karl Gottlieb Horstig (also Carl Gottlieb Horstig ; born June 3, 1763 in Reinswalde near Sorau; † January 21, 1835 in Miltenberg am Main in Lower Franconia) was a German pastor and founder of the second oldest German stenography system .

Life

His parents were Johann Georg Horstig (1694–1779) and his second wife, Anna Rosina Güttner, whom he married in 1760. His father was a sexton, schoolmaster and church clerk and his grandfather was a miller in Bogendorf near Zibelle.

Horstig studied theology in Leipzig, became a pastor in Eulo near Forst in Niederlausitz in 1787 and followed a call to Bückeburg in 1792 , where he later held the office of chief preacher, superintendent and scholar. He took the young Ludwig Polstorf into his house.

In 1795 he married Susette, the older sister of Nina d'Aubigny von Engelbrunner , who followed him there.

When the stenographic movement spread in France and England, he published his "Easier German Stenography" in 1797 (one year after Friedrich Mosengeil ). However, his system still had shortcomings and could not prevail over that of Gabelsberger and Stolze .

His in-laws were avid travelers. At the beginning of 1803 he accompanied them, with his wife and son Eduard, as well as Nina and Emilie, to France and England.

Retired early after a mental illness, he moved to Heidelberg in 1803 and later to Miltenberg, where he was able to acquire the Mildenburg from Emrich Carl von Leiningen in August 1808 . His heirs sold the castle in 1856 to the Magdeburg businessman Carl Wilhelm Zimmermann.
