Life

Training and work

Friedrich Mosengeil studied theology in Jena in 1791 and was appointed by his college friend, the later famous forest scientist Heinrich Cotta , as a teacher of German language and mathematics at his newly founded forest school in Zillbach , where he worked until 1798. Then he went to Frauenbreitungen , where his father was a pastor and whom he supported in his service. In 1804 he received the title of Consistorial Assessor and as such he was educator of the Hereditary Prince Bernhard of Saxony-Meiningen with right of residence in the ducal palace. He accompanied the prince on his travels and also followed him during his studies at the universities of Jena and Heidelberg . In 1816 he received the title of consistorial councilor , in 1821 he became a real member of the ducal consistory in Meiningen and later also became senior consistorial councilor.

Poetry

Mosengeil was also active as a poet, including contributions to Christoph Martin Wieland's Der teutsche Merkur . His enthusiastic leader of the ducal Meiningischen spa town Bad Liebenstein appeared as advertising leaflet in 1815 . He was friends with Johann Ernst Wagner .

Friedrich Mosengeil also wrote a poem on the “declamatory accompaniment” to Beethoven's incidental music op. 84 for Goethe's tragedy Egmont . The poem was written in 1821 with the aim of spreading Beethoven's music, was supposed to evoke “memories of the main scenes of the drama” and “be welcome in places where there is no theater or where Goethe's Egmont with Beethoven's music is not given” ( General musical newspaper, 1821)

Acquaintances

Around 1791 he made the acquaintance of Christian Truchseß von Wetzhausen . He reports on his stay in the Bettenburg in his publication Letters about the poet Ernst Wagner .

He was also personally acquainted with Johann Wolfgang von Goethe from around 1819, met and corresponded with him a few times.

Mosengeil met Friedrich von Matthisson in 1827/1828 .

At the beginning of 1835, on the recommendation of Johannes Schulze, he was sent to Berlin to personally inspect Moritz Seebeck as a possible high school director for Meiningen and as a prince educator. This encounter was assessed with a positive report from Mosengeil, so that Seebeck could switch to Meinigen.
