Lists on the subject

The Carl Gustaf M / 45 is a Swedish submachine gun . It was in the arsenal of the Swedish armed forces for several decades and was exported in large quantities.

history

When the Swedish military made the decision to equip their troops with submachine guns before World War II , they first opted for the Finnish Suomi M-31 . It was initially recreated as Model 37 , then improved as Model 37/39 . Although a very robust weapon, it turned out to be far too complicated to manufacture. Since the number of units delivered fell short of expectations, a new development was commissioned. The main focus was on efficient production with the greatest possible use of metal stamping technology . Other submachine guns produced in large quantities were the inspiration for the weapon, such as the German MP 40 or the British Sten MP . The weapon was not ready for series production until after the war and was officially included in the army's equipment in 1948.

technology

The M / 45 is a recoil loader of the simplest kind. Almost all parts are made of spot-welded sheet steel. The housing has been perforated for the cocking handle , the closing spring is open. In order to secure the weapon, the cocking handle must be locked in a notch at the top of the housing, as with the Sten. The simple way of production did not detract from the reliability. In Sweden alone, an estimated 300,000 units were built and exported all over the world. The Carl Gustaf was used by Egyptian soldiers in the Yom Kippur War , but also by American elite units in the Vietnam War . In addition to standard models ( Swedish K ), special models with a silencer were also supplied to the United States Army .

Palestinian replicas

The simple technology makes it possible to manufacture this weapon in simply equipped workshops. So replicas are made in different variants by local Palestinian blacksmiths. Such a Carlo was found for the first time in 2000. The cost is only a fraction of what a Kalashnikov would cost . Therefore it was first used by Arab criminals, but has been the "standard weapon" in Palestinian gun attacks in Israel since 2015. In a deadly terrorist attack in Tel Aviv on June 8, 2016 , both attackers were equipped with such replicas.

Trivia

In the movie RED - aging, curing, better preserved former CIA - Agent Frank Moses ( Bruce Willis ), the M / 45 along with other weapons that he has set aside "just in case".
