Carl Gustav Count v. Sievers

Carl Gustav Graf von Sievers ( russ . Карл Карлович [Карл Густав] Сиверс; born November 8 jul. / 19th November  1772 greg. In Old Ottenhof , Livonia , † March 18 jul. / 30th March  1856 greg. In Moscow ) was a Russian general and statesman of German-Baltic origin.

Life

He was the son of Count Karl Eberhard von Sievers (1745–1821) and Freiin Martha von Mengden (1748–1837), and nephew of the important Russian statesman Jacob Johann von Sievers .

Carl Gustav von Sievers joined the Russian artillery and engineer cadet corps in 1785 and was hired as a piece junker in the army in 1789 . In the following wars, first against Poland in 1792, he quickly made a career and in 1803 was major general. In 1806 he fought against Turkey , losing his brother Jakob Ernst von Sievers in 1810 , in 1806 in the Third Coalition War in the Battle of Austerlitz against France, as well as in the fourth on the side of Prussia.

During the Austrian campaign against the Duchy of Warsaw in 1809, a Russian cavalry troop under his command occupied Krakow before the Polish army under Poniatowski could take possession of the city in accordance with an agreement with the Austrian high command. The incident increased the already tense relationship of the allied Poles and Russians to open hatred. For contemporaries it remained unclear whether, as officially stated, it was simply an unauthorized action by Sievers.

During Napoleon's war against Russia in 1812 , he was awarded the George Cross as a general for his services in the Battle of Smolensk and Borodino .

In 1813 he was first in command of Königsberg and then governor of East Prussia . On December 6, 1833 Sievers was appointed Russian senator. He died in Moscow on March 18, 1856.
