Carl Jonas Love Almqvist ( pronunciation : [ ˌkɑːɹl ˌ ʝuːnas ˌluːvə ˈalːmkvist ], born November 28, 1793 in Stockholm , † September 26, 1866 in Bremen ) was a Swedish writer and composer .

Life

Carl Jonas Love Almqvist was an extremely versatile writer whose style can be classified as romantic on the one hand , but who on the other hand is still considered one of the most modern authors of the Swedish language . He was a feminist and social reformer who was condemned by the Church as a dangerous revolutionary for his work.

Among his numerous works is Det går an von 1839, which made it onto the bestseller list in 2004 under the German title Die Woche mit Sara . The work caused a scandal because it propagated living together without marriage. Several authors wrote counter-drafts, including August Blanche ( Det går an ), Sophie von Knorring ( Så går det ), Malla Montgomery-Silfverstolpe ( Månne det gå an? ), JV Snellman ( Det går an ) and Wilhelmina Stålberg ( Eva Widebeck eller Det går aldrig an ).

Almqvist has been charged with murder and prosecuted - he was accused of killing a shady business acquaintance, the usurer Jakob von Scheven, with arsenic . It can no longer be reconstructed today whether the allegations were justified. Almqvist panicked and fled to the United States . In 1865 he changed his identity and returned to Europe. He lived under the name "Professor Carl Westermann" until his death in Bremen, Seemannstrasse 7. He was initially buried in a poor grave in Herdentorsfriedhof, but exhumed a few days later at the instigation of his daughter and was buried for the last time in the family grave in Solna, Sweden, in 1901 .

As a pianist , Almqvist was famous for his free fantasies . In addition to piano fantasies, he composed a large number of songs that were stylistically based on the Viennese classic , and the texts of which he wrote himself.
