Carl Kaysen

Carl Kaysen (born March 5, 1920 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania , † February 8, 2010 in Cambridge , Massachusetts ) was an American economist , author and government advisor .

Life

Carl Kaysen was married twice. His daughter, the author Susanna Kaysen , comes from his first marriage to Annette Neutra, who died in 1990. He studied a. a. from the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard University ( Ph.D. 1954). Kaysen received a Guggenheim grant and has worked in the fields of economics, politics and sociology . His main fields of activity were arms control and international relations . During his studies, he worked for the Office of Strategic Services of the United States Department of War . From 1955 to 1966 he taught at Harvard University . He later was a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and director of the Institute for Advanced Study . From 1981 he was also director of his science department at MIT. Carl Kaysen was Vice Chairman of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences , to which he was elected in 1954, and since 1967 a member of the American Philosophical Society .

Presidential Advisor

From 1961 to 1963, Carl Kaysen was an advisor to President John F. Kennedy in the Executive Office . As Deputy National Security Advisor , he reported directly to National Security Advisor McGeorge Bundy and was responsible for foreign trade , economics and the potential use of nuclear weapons .
