Antonio Maria Visentini (born November 21, 1688 in Venice ; died June 26, 1782 there ) was an Italian architect, painter and professor at the Venetian Academy .

Life

Visentini was born the son of the barber Melchiore Visentini, who died in 1709. He was a student of the Baroque painter Giovanni Antonio Pellegrini , who went to England with Marco Ricci in 1708 and painted Castle Howard there . The Venetian painters guild "Fraglia dei pittori" named him for the first time in 1711 as a member. He published his architectural studies on St. Mark's Basilica in 1726 under the title "Iconografia della Ducal Basilica dell'Evangelista Marco".

Working with the British merchant and later consul Joseph Smith for his publisher Pasquali resulted in a series of orders, such as the engravings for Canaletto's Venetian vedute under the title Venetiarum nobis Prospectus , started in 1728, finished with 38 engravings in 1735 and published in 1742. The publisher's signature Pasquali with the Minerva and the motto "Litterarum felicitas" came from him. The beginning and end vignettes for the twenty-volume “Della Istoria d'Italia” by Francesco Guicciardini , reissued by Pasquali from 1738–1739, were by him, as well as over 48 engravings.

With Francesco Zuccarelli , he carried out a commission from Smith in 1746 to paint English villas in the Palladian style in capriccios, based on Colen Campbell , Vitruvius Brittanicus and William Kent , The Designs of Inigo Jones , Zuccarelli painted the rural scenes. Smith himself was involved in the translation of the sixth edition of the Cyclopaedia of Ephraim Chambers from 1741 into Italian, with the illustrations for this Dizionario Universale Delle Arti e Delle Scienze, ... Visentini was employed, who was thus the main illustrator of the Pasquali publishing house.

Visentini received the order from Smith to rebuild his Byzantine palazetto on the Grand Canal in the Palladian style , which lasted from 1743 to 1750. Visentini had previously worked as an architect in Smith's villa in the Terraferma , which he had acquired in 1731. His drawings of the villa came into the possession of the Royal Library through the Smith Collection.

He worked with the physicist at the University of Padua Giovanni Poleni and provided the engravings for Poleni's study of the dome of St. Peter's Basilica  : Memorie istoriche della Gran Cupola del Tempio Vaticano , Padua 1748. In the Villa Valmarana ai Nani near Vicenza in 1757 he was given the opportunity to study in to paint the frescoes in a room , Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo painted the figures.

The English architect James Wyatt also worked for Visentini in Venice from 1762 to 1768 during his stay in Italy . Visentini was from 1772 to 1778 professor of “Architettura Prospettica” at the Venice Academy of Art. Visentini wrote various "anti-Baroque" writings under titles such as "Contra Rusconi" or "The mistakes of the architects", a counter-writ to Teofilo Gallacini, published in 1771 by Pasquali.
