Carl Leopold Röllig

Carl Leopold Röllig (* around 1754 in Hamburg ; † March 4, 1804 in Vienna ) was a German glass harmonica player , librarian , music journalist and composer .

Life

After 1781 he toured Europe as a glass harmonica virtuoso , and also performed in Berlin in 1787 . In 1791 he got a job as a librarian at the Viennese court library . He is considered one of the inventors of the keyboard harmonica, a glass harmonica with a keyboard. In 1795 he invented a portable piano that he called Orphica , and in 1801 the Xanorphika, a type of bow piano. From 1798 until his death he was also the Viennese correspondent of the Leipziger Allgemeine Musikische Zeitung .

He last lived at Spitalplatz No. 1166, where he died of "emaciation" at the age of 50.

Röllig was Kapellmeister at the Ackermann Theater Society in Hamburg from 1764 to 1769 and 1771/72 .
