Carl Ludwig Christian von Wartensleben (* July 24, 1733 ; † April 1, 1805 ) was a Dutch lieutenant general of German origin and also treasurer of the Elector Palatinate.

Life

origin

He comes from the Exten family of Wartensleben . His parents were Carl Philipp Christian von Wartensleben (* February 11, 1689; † January 3, 1760) and his wife Albertine Luise Sophie Christine Quad von Wickrath (* July 19, 1697; † May 7, 1744). She was the daughter of Ludwig Alexander Rölemann von Quadt von Wykradt .

Military career

Wartensleben began his career in the Dutch army. On June 12, 1747 he was named captain of the 3rd Battalion of the High German troops by the Prince of Orange with a patent from April 5, 1748 . The regiment was merged with the 2nd regiment in 1752 and Wartensleben was transferred to the 1st battalion. In 1759 he switched to Austrian services and joined the Ogulin border regiment . He must have returned then, because on March 25, 1766 he was promoted to major in the 2nd regiment. Wartensleben was the successor to his older brother Friedrich August Alexander (April 8, 1731, † December 2, 1793). As early as September 10, he was given the character of a lieutenant colonel and on February 18, 1774 that of a colonel .

On April 30, 1789 he was named major general of the infantry with the patent dated October 15, 1787 . However, he did not receive his patent as lieutenant colonel of the 2nd regiment until July 13, 1790. He thus succeeded the Marquis de Bellgarde, who took over the regiment Nassau-Usingen. On February 28, 1794 he was appointed lieutenant general.

When the Netherlands entered the First Coalition War in 1793 , Wartensleben joined the army of the Prince of Orange. He took part in the battles of Mruchin and Werwick. On June 16, 1794 he commanded the 4th column in the Battle of Charleroi and was wounded. He said goodbye, returned to Exten and died on April 1, 1805 of the injuries.

family

Wartensleben married in August 1758 Conradine Dorothea von Quadt (* August 9, 1736 - June 2, 1802), daughter of Johann Christian Rölemann Quadt von Wickrath . After the death of his first wife, he married Countess Isabella Johanna Wilhelmine von Lynar on June 8, 1803 (* November 17, 1781, † February 25, 1849). With her he had the daughter Katharina Isabella Caroline Marianna (* September 28, 1804; † June 2, 1884), who married on April 13, 1825 with Eckhard Pabst von Ohain († April 11, 1853).
