from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Carl Masaru Yoshimoto (born April 27, 1922 in Honolulu , Hawaii ; died February 25, 2011 in Calgary , Canada ) was an American entomologist and parasitologist who primarily dealt with the systematics of the ore wasps .

Life

Carl Masaru Yoshimoto grew up with two younger sisters in a Japanese immigrant family. His father was a plantation worker who immigrated from Japan and his mother was a Nisei . When Yoshimoto was to be drafted during the Second World War , there was a delay due to appendicitis , so that the war was over after Yoshimoto's basic training. After his discharge from military service, he benefited from the benefits of the GI Bill of Rights and took on the Wesleyan University in Iowa to study liberal arts , which he led to a Bachelor of Arts . In 1950 he moved on the advice of one of his professors to study entomology at Kansas State University , where he graduated in 1952 with a Master of Science . In 1955 he received his doctorate from Cornell University with a dissertation on the breeding behavior of the wasps (Pompilidae) to the Ph.D. After completing his training, he was employed by the US Department of Agriculture and was engaged in research on fruit flies (Drosophilidae) and their use of messenger substances . He was sent to Mexico City for two years , where he met and married his wife, Ruth Reiko Nishimura.

From 1957 Carl Yoshimoto worked as an entomologist at the Bernice P. Bishop Museum in Honolulu . In 1967 he took a one-year sabbatical for a research stay at the Natural History Museum in London. He then began working as an entomologist at the Canadian Department of Agriculture and Forestry (now Natural Resources Canada ), where he conducted research in the Canadian National Collection of Insects and Arachnids in Ottawa . He retired in 1987 and moved with his family to Calgary in January 2003 and died there in February 2011.

Yoshimoto's research mainly dealt with the systematics and ecology of the wood wasps (Chalcidoidea). During his career, Yoshimoto has authored more than ninety scientific publications, including several revisions of ore wasp families. Yoshomoto has a number of genera and species described .
