Carl Olof Rosenius (born February 3, 1816 in Nysätra ( Västerbotten province ), † February 24, 1868 in Stockholm ) was a Swedish lay preacher and initiator of a new Evangelical Swedish revival movement , which was organized in 1856 as the Evangelical Fatherland Foundation ( Evangeliska Fosterlandsstiftelsen ).

Carl Olof Rosenius was born as the third of seven children of pastor Anders Rosenius in Nysätra. After completing high school in Härnösand , he began studying theology at Uppsala University in 1838 , which he broke off in 1840 after a religious crisis triggered by his encounter with the English Methodist preacher George Scott . In the same year he moved to Stockholm and became Scott's helper.

After Scott was forced to leave Sweden in 1842, Rosenius became the central figure of an inner-church revival movement , which was organized in 1856 in the Evangelical Fatherland Foundation (Evangeliska Fosterlandsstiftelsen) . Rosenius has since preached in the Betlehemskyrkan in Stockholm, which was supported by the Fosterlandsstiftelsen; in addition, he made numerous preaching trips throughout the country. His most important forum was the journal Pietisten (the Pietist) , which he founded in 1842 .

Rosenius also wrote a number of hymns. Four of them are still in the current Swedish hymn book from 1986.

From 1843 until his death, Rosenius was with Agatha geb. Lindberg married. Their daughter Elisabeth Nyström (1848–1889) was a well-known painter. The ornithologist Paul Rosenius was his nephew.
