The diving bell ship Carl Straat was built in 1963 by Lübecker Maschinenbau AG, Orenstein & Koppel , for the Waterways and Shipping Directorate West in Münster . It was named after the first president of the former Duisburg Waterways and Shipping Authority, Carl Straat, 1946–1953.

The steering position and accommodation for the crew are on the foredeck. Aft is the device for raising and lowering the diving bell . This has the dimensions 4.0 × 6.0 × 2.5 meters and is accessible via a pipe with a diameter of 2 meters and pressure locks. The diving bell is moved with an on-board crane on the divided aft section. Thanks to a parallelogram , the bell is kept horizontal in every position and can be lowered up to 10 meters below the waterline. The stairs inside the pipe are guided in the same way. Since there is overpressure inside the diving bell, you can examine the river bed without any problems and remove any underwater obstacles. The bell has a load capacity of 15 tons. Since the bell is attached to the stern of the ship, basic inspections can also be carried out near the shore.

Others

On board the Carl Straat are an operations manager, a skipper, a machinist and four sailors, one of whom also works as an engine attendant and one as a cook seaman. Another seaman is the lock keeper and responsible for the compressed air supply. For work in pressure rooms, all crew members must demonstrate a special medical examination (G 31, scope: working in compressed air with an overpressure of more than 0.1 bar).

The construction costs of the ship amounted to almost 8.5 million Deutschmarks in 1963. The area of application are basically all inland waterways that can be reached via correspondingly large locks, but the ship is primarily used on the Rhine between Emmerich and Iffezheim and on the Moselle from Koblenz to Trier .

At the end of November 2018, the General Directorate for Waterways and Shipping announced that a replacement for the ship had been ordered from the Damen Shipyards Group . The new building should be delivered in 2020.

Television appearances

The Carl Straat appears as a result of the series MS Franziska being delayed , with the dive being shown in detail. The ship made another appearance in Tatort: Breath of Death (2010).

In the documentation The Rhine from above: 2. The green Rhine by Florian Huber, the diving ship can also be seen in action.
