Episodes

1st family day
As every year, the family gathers for Aunt Martha's 60th birthday in Leutesdorf , where the family has a house right by the landing stage. The members are introduced:

Paul lives with his Dutch wife Aavje, she comes from Dordrecht , and their daughter Christa, who is not yet of school age, on the MS Franziska. However, his father Jakob is still in command - Paul also has the captain's license. The Franziska has a small engine failure, so that you arrive late for the celebration and have to leave quickly. It turns out that the engine needs to be overhauled.

Paul's brother Bruno has recently become the captain of the Mannesmann III push boat and always has 14 days on duty and a week off so that he can be with Aunt Martha by lunchtime. There he met the savings bank employee Petra, who recently lived in his old room for rent. Bruno is the only family member who appears in the series as a driver.

Paul's other brother Ernst is the captain of the Britannia , a modern river cruise ship of the KD . His wife Ruth is busy building her own home in Cologne-Riehl , and the financing has slipped out of her hands. She hopes to be able to solve the problem with a mortgage on the house in Leutesdorf or the bonus for scrapping the MS Franziska. These suggestions should be discussed at the celebration. Niko, their son, is an apprentice on the MS Franziska.

2. In the Green Rooster
The MS Franziska is driving flawlessly again with its now overhauled machine.

The harbor pastor is introduced, a friend of Jakob, whom everyone calls Blacky because of his black clothes. He does not have a driver's license and can mostly be found on his bike or on the church boat St. Nikolaus . He is not averse to alcohol and is a big football fan.

Niko has to go to Duisburg on the training ship Rhine for 10 weeks . There he met Manfred: During a forbidden visit to the Green Rooster, a restaurant within sight of the school ship, Manfred secretly pours schnapps into Nikos beer, whereupon he spends the night in the bed of the landlady Elsi.

3. Short journey
While lying in a French canal, a man comes on board who has left the Foreign Legion and is now wanted by the gendarmerie. But he can hide so well in Niko's bunk at the bow of the boat that he cannot be found. Jakob is not told anything about it, but he has long since noticed that the person he is looking for is on the Franziska. In Germany, the guest finally jumps overboard.

During a short visit to the Britannia, Jakob signs the mortgage letter for Ernst's house building. On the Britannia there is a smuggler who has jewels from a millionaire robbery with her and is finally convicted by an investigator disguised as a passenger.

4. Test drive
The MS Franziska is due to a screw damage at the shipyard in Duisburg, which is why Paul and Aavje are in Leutesdorf. When Paul has to rest while cleaning the house, Bruno, who is also present, suggests that he spend a day on the Mannesmann III to see the work. In the case of early departure, he abandons Petra because he shrinks from getting married.

While Aavje fears that her husband will have to stay ashore in the future because of a change of job, the rescue helicopter takes him off board because of a ruptured appendix and takes him to a Duisburg hospital.

On the training ship, Manfred only passes the exam with Niko's help. In return, he shows Niko how to row for the final competition, so that Niko scores passably. Manfred achieved the best time of all years.

Jakob has received a lucrative transport and takes Erwin Lehmann on board as a replacement for Paul, who has previously worked on a diving bell ship, but his health is no longer good.

5. Pancakes and genever
Bruno cannot find a woman at the beginning of his week off who has time for him to do something. So he drives to Leutesdorf, but learns that Petra has moved out in the meantime. She is currently setting up her new apartment with a work colleague and does not say a word to Bruno.

The Franziska is on her way to Holland with fertilizer, a board-to-board load for the Jastarnia Bor, a Polish ocean-going ship. The captain invites them to dinner, and Niko is so overwhelmed by the size of the ship that he would like to go to sea himself later. Jakob then desperately looks for transportation for the return journey while Aavje, Paul and Christa take a look at Rotterdam . Finally you drive back empty and stop at the old friend Pieter Voorman, a retired captain, although he is younger than Jakob. There are pancakes and genever , although Jakob cannot take much of them and has to be put to bed early. In front of the house, Niko meets a pop group that wants to go to a festival in Essen , but their minibus has broken down. He suggests asking if they can be taken along on the Franziska. The band plays a little longer in the Voormans' living room and is then allowed to spend the night on Franziska, the singer Femke, she comes from The Hague , in Nikos bed. The minibus is secretly brought to the Franziska the next morning, so that Jakob only notices something while driving and can no longer object.

6. Delay
Erwin Lehmann starts again on the diving bell ship Carl Straat , but as a cook. The diving process is shown.

Ruth and Ernst invite you to the house inauguration in Cologne. Jakob receives a lucrative charge for Franziska, which allows them to be there on time. Niko finds this particularly interesting, as Femke said by telegram that she would change trains at Cologne Central Station on the same day and that they could meet.

Bruno attends a Bundesliga match and meets Blacky in front of the stadium. Excerpts from the encounter between MSV Duisburg and Tennis Borussia Berlin are shown, which actually took place on Maundy Thursday, April 7, 1977, but in the series it is on a Friday evening.

A collision with careless sports boaters delays the MS Franziska's voyage. Niko can take the train to Femke in time, but learns that she is going to America and that their relationship no longer makes sense. Then he gets drunk and doesn't come to the housewarming party until late in the evening, where he meets Bruno. He has just learned that Petra is taking care of Aunt Martha's cats, sees a chance to continue the relationship with her and goes there immediately.

7. Downhill run
Petra and Bruno are together again and want to get married soon. In Strasbourg , Jakob accepts a transport that can hardly be done in terms of time. To make matters worse, fog is announcing itself and the MS Franziska has no radar . Paul then disembark and Niko is supposed to look for him in all the restaurants on behalf of Aavje. He finds him with a bottle of plum brandy and with great effort brings him back to the Franziska. You drive and Jakob can't be made to stop even by the fog. At Ehrenthaler Werth it finally comes to an average. Aavje and Christa are brought to Leutesdorf by Bruno and the ship is towed to the shipyard in Duisburg. Jakob decides to return his patent. Niko can continue his training on a coupling bandage.

Ruth still fails to finance the house, whereupon she rents the house to the family of a department head for a year and, to the surprise of her husband, comes on board the Britannia. There she takes over the souvenir shop.

8. On Sloophelling
Petra and Bruno get married on the church
boat . A few days later, Paul visits them. He says that the insurance company fully covered the damage to the Franziska. And he asks whether he could still start with Mannesmann on a push boat, but the situation has become more difficult in the last six months. He initially works as a delivery co-driver for a supermarket chain and then goes to the radar course on the training ship, where he discusses the purchase of a modern ship with other participants. You can even look at a used push boat.

Jakob lives with Blacky for a few weeks and tries to sell the Franziska in parts for as much money as possible. Nobody in his family knows whether he wants to scrap it or have it repaired again. Finally he asks his sons to go to Leutesdorf to ask if Paul shouldn't be made afloat again for the 100,000 DM proceeds. He had heard of Paul's visit to a pub and thought it was a good idea that several captains would join forces. Ernst and Bruno agree to this immediately and Aavje can hardly believe that she will soon be living on a ship again, so that the next day they test drive the slipcase.

MS Franziska

The ship in the film

The MS Franziska was built as a barge in 1902 and was later converted into a motor ship. It has a load capacity of 1262 t and a machine with 660 HP. It is 80 m long and 9.20 m wide. The home port is Leutesdorf.

The ship used

In fact, the shooting took place on the MS Barbara Krüger 2 , which was originally called Freischütz . Dimensions, weights and machine performance corresponded to the specifications in the series, but the year of construction with 1929 did not. In the scenes on the bridge, the carelessly removed original name can be seen in the side window. The owner was Heinrich Krüger from Celle , the home port of Dorfprozelten . The ship was scrapped after an accident in mid-1979, which happened at kilometer 160 on the Main in the upper water of the Eichel lock near Wertheim . The opponent of the accident was the Vitesse 2 from Lübeck , which is now on the road as the Tokaj 2 .

When scrapping on sloophelling another ship is shown - on closer inspection recognizable among other things by the smaller steering position .
