Life

Carl Wilhelm Bergemann was born in Berlin and was the son of the medical advisor and pharmacist GW Bergemann († July 15, 1837), who owned an extensive mineralogical collection in 1828. His mother was born Waldow . Carl Wilhelm Bergemann was in 1826 at the Georg-August-University of Goettingen in chemistry doctorate . So far nothing more is known about his youth. He lived as a pharmacist in Berlin. In 1830 he became a lecturer at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn for " Pharmacy , Chemistry and Physics ", the "Chemical Cabinet" and the "Pharmaceutical Apparatus" of the university. For the late Nees von Esenbeck , he also took over the management of the Botanical Garden in Bonn in 1838 . In the winter semester of 1835/36, the young Karl Marx was interested in his lecture “General Experimental Chemistry”. In 1839 Robert Graßmann , a brother of Hermann Grassmann , heard "experimental chemistry" from him.

Since 1831 he was a member of the Bonplandia . and since 1831 member of the Leopoldina . In addition, he was also a teacher for chemistry at the "royal higher agricultural institute" in Poppelsdorf .

On June 6, 1840, he was appointed full professor of the philosophical faculty by the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm IV .

In 1851 Bergemann believed to have discovered a new metal, which he named "Donarium" . Other researchers refuted him.

His successor at Bonn University was Friedrich Mohr in 1867 . Afterwards Bergemann was professor for pharmacy at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Berlin. Bergemann last lived in Hallesches Ufer 5 ground floor in Berlin .
