Carl August Graf von Attems-Petzenstein (born October 13, 1868 in Graz , † April 19, 1952 in Vienna ) was an Austrian zoologist. He published numerous scientific papers, mostly on his specialty, the millipedes .

Life

Carl August Graf von Attems- Petzenstein was born in 1868 as the son of the major and pomologist Heinrich Graf von Attems-Petzenstein (1834–1909) and Thekla v. Schmidt-Pauli (1848–1927) born. He received his doctorate in law from the University of Graz and then studied zoology in Bonn and Vienna. His dissertation at the University of Vienna dealt with "The copulation feet of the polydesmids". From then on he became the best expert on the Myriopods and devoted himself almost exclusively to them. He described about 1,800 new species and subspecies from around the world and published 138 papers. The zoologist Karl Wilhelm Verhoeff (1867–1945), active in the same field, dedicated new species to him. New genera (Attemsia Verh., Attemsocyphus Verh., Attemsodesmus RF Lawrence) were named after him; The diplopod family Attemsiidae also takes its name from him.

In 1905 he became a research assistant in the Vienna Court Museum, today's Natural History Museum Vienna . In 1911 he married the painter Emma von Montbach (1874–1959). In 1919 he was appointed custodian 2nd class and in 1921 custodian 1st class. He then headed the invertebrate zoological department in the museum. In recognition of his scientific work, he received the title of Councilor on September 20, 1946 .
