Carl von Hardenberg (Oberhofmarschall)

Carl von Hardenberg (full name Carl Philipp von Hardenberg ; born October 14, 1756 in HanoverJanuary 31, 1840 ibid) was a German lawyer and court marshal of the Kingdom of Hanover .

Life

Carl von Hardenberg came from the Lower Saxon noble family von Hardenberg and was born in 1756 as the son of Hans Ernst von Hardenberg and Eléonore von Wangenheim. He was the brother of, among others , August Wilhelm Carl von Hardenberg (1752-1824).

Carl von Hardenberg studied law at various universities and worked as an auditor at the Electoral Court in Hanover from 1777 at the time of the Electorate Braunschweig-Lüneburg and during the personal union between Great Britain and Hanover. In 1781 he worked in Celle as a judicial councilor at the local court of appeal , where he was appointed court judge assessor in Hanover until 1805, while in 1803 he was appointed. In 1805 he took over the function of court judge in Hanover, around that time he also married the Countess von Wartenberg.

During the so-called " French era " and in the Kingdom of Westphalia established by Napoleon Bonaparte , von Hardenberg was entrusted by the Westphalian government with the duties of Landdrosten von Ratzeburg in 1814 .

After the elevation of the former electorate to the Kingdom of Hanover, Carl von Hardenberg was replaced by King George III, who lived in Great Britain . Appointed Oberhofmarschall of the newly formed state at the end of 1815. In the same year he was awarded the Grand Cross of the Guelph Order.

From Carl von Hardenberg an exchange of letters with the writer and state theorist Benjamin Constant has been preserved.

With the Countess von Wartenberg, who was married around 1805, Carl von Hardenberg had three sons and two daughters, among them

  • Peter Theodor (September 10, 1768 - August 26, 1813).
  • Karl studied forestry, married Countess Adelheid von Kielmannsegg in 1820, with whom he had at least two sons by 1823.
  • Adolf died early.
  • Julie married a count from the von Platen-Hallermund family.
  • Pauline married the noble captain from the du Plat family in 1821 .
