Carl (Rosén) von Rosenstein (born May 13, 1766 in Uppsala as Carl Aurivillius ; † December 2, 1836 in Brunna, today Vänge , Uppsala parish ) was a Swedish Lutheran theologian and Archbishop of Uppsala from 1819 until his death .

Life

Carl von Rosenstein was the son of Anna Margaretha Rosén von Rosenstein and Samuel Aurivillius (1721–1767), professor of medicine and rector of Uppsala University . He was enrolled in the university the year he was born. Through the adoption by his noble maternal grandfather Nils Rosén von Rosenstein , he received the name Rosén von Rosenstein , but called himself von Rosenstein .

Rosenstein first studied classical languages ​​(with his later predecessor as Archbishop Jacob Axelsson Lindblom ) and then Protestant theology and was appointed lecturer at the theological faculty after passing the candidate exam in 1790. In 1791 he was ordained and after a trip abroad took over the post of preacher in the body regiment . In 1793 he married the baroness Henrietta Elisabet Cederström . As a pastor in the pastorate of Kumla in the diocese of Strängnäs (since 1796) he worked in the sense of neology .

After two-time proposals to the bishop, he was appointed in 1809 Bishop of Linköping appointed and the University of Uppsala to Dr. theol. PhD. From the same year he was also a member of the pastorate of the Swedish State Council . During the deliberations on the Swedish Constitution of 1809 , he campaigned, among other things, for the extension of religious freedom (§ 16) and for the regulation on freedom of the press issued the following year. As a bishop he promoted the school system, but also the economic development of Östergötland , z. B. through the Göta Canal .

Appointed archbishop in 1819 , Rosenstein served as the highest representative of the Church of Sweden until his death . But he hardly set theological accents, but was more a diplomat and politician. In 1836 he died of a fall on his private property.

Honors

Rosenstein was admitted to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in 1809 and as an honorary member of the Kungliga Vitterhets Historie och Antikvitets Academies in 1810 . In both academies he was temporarily chairman (1815 and 1829). From 1819 until his death he was a member of the Svenska Academies (chair 5). In 1818 he received the Order of Charles XIII, which was only awarded to Freemasons . and in 1829 the Royal Order of Seraphines .
