Carlo Antonio Bay
Carlo Antonio Bay ; Also Karol Bay , original family name probably Baio (* October 18th 1678 in Magliaso ; † around 1740 ? in Warsaw), a Polish architect and builder was Switzerland-Italian descent. He was a representative of the baroque and worked mainly in Warsaw .
Life
Bay is referred to as a royal architect ( Magnificius Sacrae Regiae Maiestatis Architectus ) for the period from 1722 to 1737 . He mainly built sacred buildings, among which the Warsaw Visitant Church , a three-aisled basilica with a presbytery in Krakowskie Przedmieście, is worth mentioning. In 1727 an agreement was signed between the Warsaw Order of the Salesians and the architect, according to which he should build this church dedicated to the memory of Joseph . The construction of the church began on August 28, 1728. The construction of the church was financed by Elżbieta Sieniawska, with whom Bay was already in correspondence in 1722 when he was working on the expansion of the Wilanów Palace .
The monumentality and perfect proportions of his buildings are reminiscent of the Roman baroque style of Francesco Borromini . Bay also designed interiors and altars; The project of the altar framed with black marble from Dębnik in the Warsaw Holy Cross Church comes from him. He also worked as a garden architect and town planner.
