Originally Murena studied the beautiful sciences, philosophy and law, he became a student of the architect Nicola Salvi in Rome . As early as 1730, on the recommendation of Cardinal Francesco Barberini , he came into contact with the architect Luigi Vanvitelli , who at that time was building the hospital in Ancona. Murena was his permanent collaborator from 1737. His teacher entrusted him with looking after several buildings and went to Naples himself. It was first mentioned in 1740 on the construction site of the Montemorcino monastery in Perugia. He also made a drawing for the tabernacle of the Olivetan Church in Terni. Another building he was entrusted with was the church of the nuns of St. Trinita in Foligno. His work received recognition and he was called to Rome to build the Zampaj Chapel in St. Antonio de Portoghesi. From around 1751 he was largely responsible for Vanvitelli as chief architect on the construction sites. He became a member of the Accademia di San Luca in 1759. After his death in 1764 Murena was buried in San Giovanni dei Fiorentini .
