Carlo Varini

Carlo Varini (born August 16, 1946 in Ascona , Switzerland ; † May 18, 2014 in Cathervielle , Pyrenees , France ) was a Swiss cameraman for predominantly French films .

Live and act

Varini came to film as early as 1964 when he started working as a calibrator at the Schwarz Film laboratories in Ostermundigen near Bern . He then took a work course at the Zurich School of Applied Arts. After Varini 1971 briefly as a photographer and reporter for the Ciné-Journal Suisse had worked, he got in 1972 as a camera assistant of Renato Berta first time behind a movie camera. From the beginning of the 1980s, Carlo Varini was primarily responsible as chief cameraman and photographed over 80 films in the remaining 34 years of his life, including celebrated French productions such as Luc Besson's productions Subway and The Last Battle . For his work on Besson's diving film In Rush of the Deep , Varini received a César nomination for the second time after Subway . Varini's later works, including numerous comedy clothes but also melodramas, received little attention outside the francophone world, with the exception of the melancholy masterpiece The Children of Monsieur Mathieu (2004). In 2010 Carlo Varini, who had also had French citizenship since he moved to Paris (1978), received the honorary award at the Solothurn Film Festival.
