Carlos is a western produced by Hans W. Geißendörfer in Israel , an adaptation of Schiller's Don Karlos . The first screening of the film took place in the study program of the Bavarian Radio on November 20, 1971.
action
In the south-west, at the end of the 19th century, the population was exploited by the landowner Philipp. The hired Ligo with his shady people secures him the rule. Carlos, Philip's son, is very critical of him and leads a revolt of workers and peasants against his father. The farmer Lisa, who loves Carlos, shoots Philipp, but is killed by Ligo. Philipp shoots his son in a father-son duel.
Reviews
“Attempting a Schiller adaptation (Don Carlos) in a Western guise. Director Geissendörfer argues too little for a socio-political problematic film and too much for an exciting genre film. Therefore, this experiment, which is interesting in itself, makes a rather half-baked impression, especially since it remains too clearly attached to its sources of inspiration. "
“Like similar German experiments of the time (the film) is the result of a flirtation with the trivial film, whereby in the case of Geissendörfers the flirtation is determined by condescension towards Schiller as well as the Western; had he decided instead to rape his literary source or the chosen genre or both or, even better, to make a comedy out of it, Carlos might have turned into something interesting. "
"With" Carlos ", Geissendörfer has made an exemplary trivial film: a European western that is at least equal to Sergio Leone's" Play me the song of death "in the effective arrangement of the western elements that have long since become clichés."
Remarks
Strictly speaking, the film is not a western as the action is set somewhere in southern Europe.
The film was not shown for years, but was eventually released on DVD by Arthaus .
