Anton Legner
Anton Legner (born August 28, 1928 in Gmünd-Wielands , South Bohemia , Czechoslovakia ) is a German art historian . For 20 years he was director of the Schnütgen Museum and author of numerous publications on Rhenish medieval art.
Life
Anton Legner was born the son of a hotelier and grew up in Prague . After participating in the war in 1943 and being captured by the French, he passed his Abitur in 1947 in Mühldorf am Inn . He studied art history and classical archeology, first at the philosophical-theological universities in Passau and Regensburg and from 1950 at the University of Freiburg , where he received his doctorate in 1954 under Kurt Bauch and worked as an assistant. He then worked as a research assistant at the Liebieghaus in Frankfurt . From 1970 to 1990 he was director of the Schnütgen Museum in Cologne . In 1980 he received the Cross of Merit on Ribbon of the Federal Republic of Germany and in 1991 the Order of Merit of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia .
His scientific specialty is the art of the Middle Ages . In Cologne he led a. a. the great medieval exhibitions “Rhine and Maas”, “Die Parler” and “Ornamenta Ecclesiae”.
