Rodríguez comes from the junior division of CF Monterrey , which he joined at the age of 12. Without ever having made a professional appearance at the Rayados , he and his teammate Obed Esaú were loaned out to the Spanish third division CD Toledo for the 2017/18 season. There he made his debut on October 1 (7th matchday) in a 1-0 home win against Atlético Madrid B , when he came on for Álvaro Antón in the closing stages . A month later (12th matchday) he met for the first time for his loan club in the 3: 4 home defeat against CF Fuenlabrada . He soon established himself as a regular player and never missed a single league game. He ended the season and his loan with three goals in 30 league games.

At Monterrey he waited until October 21, 2018 (13th matchday of Clausura) for his debut, when he started in the 2-1 home win against Deportivo Toluca . After he had seven more missions in the remaining Apertura in 2018, he was placed in the midfield from the start in the following Clausura 2019 . On February 16, 2019 (7th matchday of Clausura), he scored his first goal in the professional field when he scored his team in the 91st minute of the game for a 3-2 away win against Monarcas Morelia . With Monterrey he won the CONCACAF Champions League 2019 in May 2019 and was chosen as an important part of the winning team in the tournament. With Monterrey he won the Apertura in autumn 2019 . In this he was used in 23 games in which he scored one goal and prepared another. In the 2020 Clausura , which was shortened due to the COVID-19 pandemic , he completed nine games in which he succeeded in making a template.

National team

On March 23, 2019, Carlos Rodríguez made his debut for the Mexican national team when he started from the start in the friendly friendly test match against Chile and was only replaced by Miguel Layún in the 90th minute of the game . After his debut, he was praised by coach Tata Martino for his style of play, which he said made him look like a seasoned 30-year-old player.

Martino nominated him for the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup in Mexico's squad at the beginning of June . He was used in all six games of the tournament. In the 1-0 final win against the USA he was substituted on for Rodolfo Pizarro in the closing stages .
