Carlos Arturo "El Tata" Juárez (born February 8, 1916 in La Banda , † July 3, 2010 in Santiago del Estero ) was an Argentine politician , senator and five-time governor (gobernador) of the province of Santiago del Estero .

biography

After attending school, he studied law and worked as a lawyer after his admission . In 1948 he was elected governor of the province of Santiago del Estero for the first time and held the office between October 1948 and October 1952. He was then elected a member of the Argentine Senate (Senado de la Nación) .

In May 1973 Juárez, who was called El Tata (The Father) in the province , was re-elected governor of Santiago del Estero as a representative of the Peronist Party (Partido Justicialista) . This time he was in office until the abolition of this office through the process of National Reorganization (Proceso de Reorganización Nacional) initiated by the military dictatorship under General Jorge Rafael Videla in March 1976. He then went into exile in Mexico and then in Spain , in order to avoid arrest by the military regime with his wife Mercedes Marina "Nina" Aragonés de Juárez .

After the end of the military dictatorship, he returned to Argentina and in December 1983 again took over the post of governor of Santiago del Estero until December 1987. Between December 1995 and May 1998 he was again governor of the province and handed over this post to Vice-Governor Darío Moreno after he was again elected a member of the Senate. In December 1999, however, he returned as governor to Santiago del Estero and held the office until December 2002. During this term of office, his wife Nina Aragonés de Juárez was vice governor.

When she became governor herself in December 2002, she appointed her husband as Minister of Justice in the provincial government. In April 2004, there were social protests and silent marches to solve the double murder of Patricia Villalba and Leyla Bshier Nazar in La Dársena in the Banda department . In addition, the interrogation of the provincial intelligence chief Antonio Musa Azar revealed that relatives of politicians were involved in the murder and other crimes and that the governor and her husband protected them. After an investigation ordered by the central government under President Néstor Kirchner , the governor and her husband were released from their duties and replaced by Pablo Lanusse . Subsequently, Federal Judge Angel Toledo sentenced Carlos Juárez and Nina Aragonés de Juárez to the conclusion of the investigation.

Until his death, Juárez was considered the last representative of Peronism , who was still a confidante of Juan Perón and Evita Perón .
