Carlos Bustamante (filmmaker)

Carlos Bustamante (* 1941 ) is a Mexican filmmaker , cameraman and photographer . He lives in Berlin .

Live and act

In 1966 he completed his studies in theater studies at the University of Arizona and studied from 1967 to 1970 in the second year of the German Film and Television Academy Berlin (DFFB). From 1970 he worked as a freelance cameraman. From 1975 to 1977 he was professor for animation film and photography at the University of Mexico (UNAM). From 1989 to 2006 he was professor for the theory of audiovisual design and realization at the Berlin University of the Arts .

In addition to his own early work such as Green Beret , De Oppresso Liber , Adelbert's Dilemma , he is involved in numerous films as a director, cameraman or actor. He has worked with Hans Magnus Enzensberger , Helma Sanders-Brahms , Günter Peter Straschek , Felipe Cazals, Affonso Beato , Hartmut Bitomsky , Harun Farocki , Skip Norman, Hartmut Jahn , Peter Wensierski and Bernward Wember , among others . He also worked with the RAF member Holger Meins, who later died on a hunger strike, and Werner Sauber , a member of the June 2nd movement who was shot in 1975 .

He also works in the context of interdisciplinary artistic projects and is regarded as an outstanding director, cameraman and editor of contemporary concert films and performance documentaries.

In the exhibition review "Two Photographers in Berlin: Irving Penn & Carlos Bustamante", Wilfried Reichart describes Bustamante's photo series as "a wonderful composition".
