Carlos Silvestre Frenk (born October 27, 1951 ) is a British - Mexican astrophysicist . He deals with computer models of the formation of structures in the universe.

Life

Frenk studied from 1972 theoretical physics at the University of Mexico City and from 1976 at the University of Cambridge , where he received his doctorate in astrophysics in 1981. From 1981 to 1983 he was a post-doctoral student at the University of California, Berkeley , and then at the University of California, Santa Barbara and the University of Sussex . From 1985 he was a lecturer at the University of Durham , where he was reader in 1991 and professor in 1993. Since 2001 he has been Ogden Professor of Fundamental Physics and Director of the Institute for Computational Cosmology (ICC).

Frenk was involved in early studies with George Efstathiou , Marc Davis, and Simon White on Cold Dark Matter models of the early universe in the 1980s . In 2011 he received the Gruber Prize for Cosmology with Marc Davis, George Efstathiou and Simon White . He is involved in a leading position in the Virgo Consortium, a European initiative for cosmological studies with supercomputers, including the Cosmology Machine in Durham and another focus at the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics in Garching.

In 2004 Frenk became a Fellow of the Royal Society , whose Wolfson Research Merit Award he received in 2006. In 2010 he received the George Darwin Prize from the Royal Astronomical Society and the Hoyle Prize from the Institute of Physics. In 2014 he was awarded the gold medal of the Royal Astronomical Society and in 2017 he was awarded the Max Born Prize of the German Physical Society .
