Carlos Bustamante (biologist)
Carlos José Bustamante (born May 6, 1951 in Lima , Peru ) is an American molecular biologist. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences .
Life
Bustamante has been Professor of Molecular Biology and Cell Biology , Physics and Chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley , since 1998 . He received his BS from the Cayetano Heredia University in Lima, his Master in Biochemistry at the University of San Marcos and his Ph. D. Biophysics from UC Berkeley, where he along with Ignacio Tinoco, Jr. studied. As a post-doctoral student at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory , Bustamante studied with Marc Maestre. Before moving to Berkeley, he did research at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute at the University of Oregon .
Scientific focus
Carlos Bustamante uses novel methods of single molecule visualization to study the structure and functions of nucleoproteins . He also uses the optical tweezers .
