Carlos López Gonzalez (born January 17, 1981 in Tenancingo ; † December 15, 2018 ) was a Mexican cyclist .

Athletic career

Carlos López was runner-up in the 2002 Pan-American Championship in the U23 road race . The following year he won a stage of the Vuelta a las Americas . In 2004 he was successful in two stages of the Vuelta a Guatemala and was third in the overall standings. In the 2007 season López was Mexican runner-up in road racing and won the overall standings of the Vuelta a Guatemala. In 2010 he became the Mexican road champion.

On December 15, 2018, Carlos López was hit by a van while training on federal highway 136 from Apizaco to Huamantla between Teacalco and Tocatlán ; he died on the spot. The driver was the former mayor of the provincial capital Tlaxcala Adolfo Escobar, who was subsequently arrested and charged. Against a bail of 200,000 pesos (about 8,000 euros) was Escobar, against the already because corruption was detected, set free. There were no legal proceedings until March 2020.
