Carlos Pellas Chamorro (born January 10, 1953 in Granada , Nicaragua ) is the head of the Nicaraguan family company Grupo Pellas .

Pellas Chamorro

In 1875 Carlos Pellas Chamorro's great-grandfather, Alfredo Pellas, a Genoa merchant, came to Nicaragua with 400,000 United States Dollars (USD). In 1890 Alfredo Pellas bought the Finca San Antonio in Chichigalpa . In 1916 his son, grandfather Silvio F. Pellas, modernized the sugar factory and bought a new FULTON mill .

In 1952, his mother's brother, Carlos Pellas Benard, helped found the Banco de America ( BANAMER high-rise ), owned by conservatives from Granada and La Paz de Carazo in Carazo . In 1952 the parents, Alfredo Pellas and Carmen (Nena) Chamorro Benard, married in Granada. The Grupo Pellas developed as a sugar processing industry like Flor de Caña under the Somoza clan , the takeover of power by the Sandinista in 1979 gave the company a dynamic boost.

Life

Carlos Pellas' siblings are Lucía (Adelita), Alfredo and Silvio Federico. Carlos Pellas graduated from Stanford University with an MA in Business Administration and an MA in Agriculture. In 1976, Vivian Fernández García (born March 5, 1954 Havana ) and Carlos Pellas Chamorro married. You have three children. In 1987 the Pellas couple moved to Florida . In 1988 the government confiscated the Ingenio San Antonio sugar cane plantation in Chichigalpa, which, with 20,000 hectares, is a substantial part of the Nicaragua Sugar Estates Limited . Ingenio San Antonio was the most productive producer of raw sugar in Central America in the mid-1960s . The reasons for the seizure were falling production and neglect of the facility. The Sandinista government offered compensation, but no agreement was reached on annual payments.

Grupo Pellas

In 1980 Carlos Pellas Chamorro took over the management of Grupo Pellas , a conglomerate of 50 companies with annual sales of four billion USD and around 15,000 employees. The group includes:

• Education, communication: advanced training, Telefónica de Centroamérica (TELCA), Estaciones Terrenas de Satélites ESTESA, 40% share in the Nicaraguan market leader in cable television Direc TV
• Data processing: 40% stake in Gulf Business Machines , which operates in the region as General Business Machines .
• Financial services: Banco de América Central , BAC International Bank , CREDOMATIC . The most recent deal was the sale of 49.99 percent of the shares in BAC International Bank to General Electric for approximately $ half a billion. Pellas announced that he would use the money to buy banks in Guatemala and applied to open one in Mexico .
• Food: Compañía Cervecera ( Victoria and Toña ), orange plantation on the border with Costa Rica , which is one of the largest in the world with 7,000 hectares, and an orange juice press nearby.
• Vehicle trade: Casa Pellas general agent for Toyota in Nicaragua, vehicle insurance,
• Sugar industry: Licores Flor de Caña Producer of sugar and energy: Nicaragua Sugar Estates : Ingenio San Antonio In 2006, 85,000 quintals of sugar were fermented into ethanol for export .

The companies of Grupo Pellas form the most important and differentiated corporate conglomerate in Central America. Carlos Pellas Chamorro received the Premio de Empresario Distinguido in May 2005 , which was awarded by the Cámara de Comercio e Industrias de América Latina (Camacol).

Casa Pellas

The car dealership Casa Pellas was founded on March 12, 1913 by Carlos Francisco Pellas Vivas as F. Alf. Pellas & Cía. founded in Granada. The first branch was opened in 1922 in Avenida Central in Managua . Imported goods were sold: liqueurs, Firestone tires , pianos , boots. After the death of Carlos Francisco Pellas Vivas, his brother Silvio Federico Pellas Vivas (1927–1953) took over the management of the company. Julio Chamorro Benard († 1973) took over the management of the company to his son Julio Chamorro Coronel († March 1982) (he had four sisters and one of his six brothers was Edgar Chamorro ) when he died in 1982, Silvio Federico Pellas Chamorro took over the management of the company.

Hospital Metropolitano Vivian Pellas

On October 21, 1989, the couple survived a plane crash near Tegucigalpa , in which 149 people were killed and nine survived. Ms. Pellas survived with 40% skin burns and 62 broken bones, but now she's running a dance studio again. Since then she has been involved in burn and trauma surgery in Nicaragua. A private hospital at kilometer 10 of Carretera Managua - Masaya was named after Vivian Pellas and has a reputation for being the youngest and most modern hospital in Nicaragua.

Honorary Consul for Italy

Ordine della Stella della Solidarietà Italiana

On July 30th, 2008 the Italian Ambassador to Nicaragua, Alberto Boniver, decorated Carlos Pellas Chamorro with the order of Stella della Solidarietà Italiana . In October 2008 Carlos Pellas Chamorro was accredited as Honorary Consul for Italy in Granada (Nicaragua) . On this occasion it was pointed out that Grupo Pellas via Nicaragua Sugar Estate Ltd. also owned the Ingenio San Antonio sugar factory . In the fields of this sugar factory, plant protection products were used carelessly and on a massive scale. This commitment affects the health of employees, the groundwater and the environment. The Asociación Nicaragüense de Afectados por Insuficiencia Renal Crónica (ANAIRC) pointed out that employees at the Ingenio San Antonio sugar factory suffered from chronic kidney failure , of which 2,986 died. For years she has been fighting for compensation for the occupational disease in accordance with Law 456 Ley de Adicción de Riesgos y Enfermedades Profesionales of June 6, 2004. For this purpose, the Instituto Nicaragüense de Seguridad Social (INSS) is to pay pensions to more than 4,500 people.
