life and career
The letter "D" (pronounced: "Di") in his name stands for "Dangerous". Chuck D attended Roosevelt Junior Senior High School and then studied at Adelphi University in Long Island. In 1987 he brought out the first public enemy album with Flavor Flav , and in 1988 they produced It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back, one of the most influential albums in hip-hop history. To this day, Chuck D is the group's rapper , composer and music producer. Besides his career with Public Enemy, he is active in other projects. He worked on several episodes of the Public Broadcasting Service's documentary series The Blues . He hosted various shows on the left-wing American radio station Air America . In the video game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas , he speaks for radio host DJ Forth Right MC.
He often expresses himself politically; he spoke out vehemently against the Iraq war and is, among other things, an outspoken supporter of file sharing . In 2000 he appeared in a hearing before the US Congress because of this. Chuck D used the Internet for political and musical activities relatively early. Public Enemy only distributed their 1999 album online without a record company intervening. Today he runs the hip hop site RapStation.com. In 1999, Chuck D worked with Prince and contributed a rap on the song Undisputed , released on the album Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic and as a remix on Rave In2 the Joy Fantastic in 2001.
In 2003 Cuck D released the album of the same name with Fine Arts Militia, then in 2005 Drums of Death together with DJ Spooky and Dave Lombardo ( Slayer ). He appeared on an album by John Mellencamp as well as with Afrika Bambaataa , Ice-T , Trent Reznor and others as a member of the crossover band The Machine . In 2004 he gave the main speech at the first National Hip-Hop Political Convention in Newark . He stayed true to his political line, which he followed with Public Enemy and which he also expressed in the 2004 song MKLVFKWR (Make Love, Fuck War) : "Power to the people not the government", or as he later said in an interview with Mother Jones magazine added: “I think governments are the cancer of civilization. And the minute that we see seven or eight women get in a circle and start a war, I'll be shocked like a motherfucker. "
Since 2016 he has been a member of the band Prophets of Rage with former Rage Against the Machine members and B-Real . In 2018 he was appointed to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences , which awards the Oscars every year.
