Carmel Budiardjo (1973)

Carmel Budiardjo , née Brickman (born June 18, 1925 in London ; † July 10, 2021 there ), was a British human rights activist and founder of the Indonesian human rights organization Tapol . In 1995 she received the Alternative Nobel Prize ( Right Livelihood Award ).

Life

Carmel Budiardjo came from a Jewish family in London. It was influenced by their anti-fascist convictions in their left political orientation. In 1946 she graduated from the University of London with a bachelor's degree in economics. She then worked in Prague for the International Union of Students , where she met Suwondo 'Bud' Budiardjo, an Indonesian government employee. After they married in 1950, they moved to Indonesia in 1951. Carmel Budiardjo received Indonesian citizenship in 1954. She first worked as a translator for Antara , the Indonesian news agency, then as an economist for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. After studying at the University of Indonesia 's School of Economics , she lectured at Padjadjaran University in Bandung and Res Publica University (later Trisakti ) in Jakarta . She was also the speechwriter for President Sukarno in the days leading up to the September 30th Movement's attempted coup in 1965.

After General Suharto came to power in 1966, Budiardjo's husband was arrested and held for twelve years. Carmel Budiardjo was arrested in 1968 and remained in prison for three years until she was deported to England in 1971.

She then founded the Tapol campaign , which works for political prisoners in Indonesia. The name Tapol is derived from the Indonesian tahanan politik , which means "political prisoner". The organization became known when it released information about military activities and human rights violations in East Timor , which was occupied by Indonesia in 1975 and annexed in 1976 . The Tapol Bulletin was an important source of information on the human rights situation in Indonesia during Suharto's reign of the Orde Baru ("New Order") .

In 1995 Budiardjo received the Alternative Nobel Prize ( Right Livelihood Award ) on the proposal of the International Federation for East Timor . In 2009 she was awarded the Insígnia of the Ordem de Timor-Leste .

She died on July 10, 2021 at the age of 96.
