List of grape varieties

Carnelian is a red wine variety , a new breed from (Carignan x Cabernet Sauvignon) and Grenache. The crossing took place in 1949 by Harold Olmo at the University of California at Davis . The grape variety was launched in 1974.

The mother variety (Carignan x Cabernet Sauvignon) with the name F2-7 was created in 1936. The aim of the breeding was to create a variety especially for the dry and hot conditions of the Central Valley area in California . The very high-yielding variety is mostly used for blends and is also cultivated in Texas and Hawaii. The variety looks very similar to Grenache, but does not come close to it in terms of quality.

Currently, about 893 acres (361.4 hectares ) in California (→ Viticulture in California ) are planted with the Carnelian variety. Since the variety is rarely replanted, the populations decrease.

The less successful Centurian variety was bred with the same parents in 1949 .

See the article Viticulture in the United States as well as the list of grape varieties .

Lineage: ( Carignan x Cabernet Sauvignon ) x Grenache .
