Carola-Bibiane Schönlieb

Carola-Bibiane Schönlieb (born December 21, 1979 in Vienna ) is an Austrian mathematician who deals with image analysis, image processing and partial differential equations.

Schönlieb studied at the University of Salzburg with a diploma in 2004, was an assistant in Salzburg and at the Universities of Vienna (from 2005) and Cambridge (Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics, from 2008). In 2009 she received her PhD with Peter Markowich at the University of Cambridge on Modern PDE Techniques for Image Inpainting . As a post-doctoral student she was at the University of Göttingen (Institute for Numerical and Applied Mathematics). In 2010 she became a Lecturer and Reader in Cambridge (DAMTP) in 2015 and a Fellow of Jesus College in 2011 . She has been Director of the Cantab Capital Institute for the Mathematics of Information (CCIMI) at Cambridge University since 2015 and Co-Director of the EPSRC Center for Mathematical and Statistical Analysis of Multimodal Clinical Imaging (CMIH) at Cambridge University since 2016. In 2016 she became a Fellow at the Alan Turing Institute. She heads the Cambridge Image Analysis Group and is co-director of the Images Network at Cambridge University.

Among other things, it deals with the use of partial differential equations of higher order (higher than second order) to complete damaged images from information from the environment (image inpainting ). They are used, for example, in the reconstruction of old digitized images of works of art (such as medieval frescoes ). Schönlieb also deals with other methods for image analysis and processing (such as the elimination of noise , area decomposition methods , variation methods ) and generally with higher-order partial differential equations, such as the Cahn-Hilliard equation (named after John W. Cahn ).

In 2016 she received the Whitehead Prize .
