Carola Metzner-Nebelsick

Carola Metzner-Nebelsick (born Metzner, born March 21, 1962 in Berlin ) is a German prehistorian .

Life

From 1981 to 1991 Metzner studied prehistory and early history, art history, ancient history and German (Middle High German language and literature) at the Free University of Berlin , the University of Munich and Oxford University ( Queen's College ) and graduated with a Magister Artium at the Free University University of Berlin. In 1993 she did her doctorate with Bernhard Hänsel at the Free University of Berlin in the subject of prehistory. For this study, she received the 1994 award from the Southeast European Society in Munich.

A research grant from the German Archaeological Institute (1994–95) was followed by a position as a research assistant at the Institute for Prehistoric Archeology at the Free University of Berlin (1995–2003). In 2005 she qualified as a professor at the Free University of Berlin in the subject of prehistoric archeology .

In 2005/06 she represented the professorship for prehistoric and early historical archeology at the Institute for Archeology, Building Research and Monument Preservation at the University of Bamberg and taught at the Archaeological Chair at the Uniwersytet Kardynała Stefana Wyszyńskiego in Warsaw from 2005 to 2007 . In addition, from 2006 to 2007 she worked as a research assistant at the State Office for Monument Preservation and Archeology Saxony-Anhalt in Halle .

In 2007, Metzner-Nebelsick was appointed professor at the Chair for Prehistory and Protohistory at the Institute for Prehistoric and Protohistoric Archeology and Provincial Roman Archeology at the University of Munich as the successor to Volker Bierbrauer . 2010–2016 she was also director of the Department of Cultural Studies and Classical Studies at Faculty 12 at the University of Munich. Since autumn 2017 she has been dean of the Faculty of Cultural Studies at LMU. She is the spokesperson for various research groups and graduate schools based in Munich.

Her scientific focal points include research into the European Bronze Age and Iron Age , the archeology of nomads on horseback , burial ground research, hoard finds and ritual research, women in the pre-Christian metal ages, status representation and elites as well as social structures in the Bronze and early Iron Ages. As part of a DFG- funded project, she is researching a cult building from the late Bronze Age in Lăpuş ( Maramureş , north-western Romania).

Carola Metzner-Nebelsick is a full member of the German Archaeological Institute (DAI) , elected member of the Roman-Germanic Commission of the DAI , member of the scientific advisory board of the journal Archeology in Germany and member of the International Advisory Board of the journal Archaeologia Polona. Journal of Archeology . She has been a member of the DAI's central directorate since spring 2019.

Metzner-Nebelsick is married to the US prehistorian Louis D. Nebelsick .
