Carpinus polyneura is a medium-sized tree from the genus of hornbeams ( Carpinus ) with dark purple colored branches, initially shaggy hairy leaf top and along the veins shaggy hairy underside. The natural range of the species is in China.

description

Carpinus polyneura is a tree up to 15 meters high with gray bark . The twigs are dark purple, thin, sparsely white downy-haired or glabrous. The leaves have a 0.5 to 1.0 centimeter long, sparsely hairy or balding stalk. The leaf blade is 4 to 8 inches long and 1.5 to 2.5 inches wide, elliptical-lanceolate, ovate-lanceolate or oblong-lanceolate, with a broadly wedge-shaped or more or less rounded base and a regularly double-bristle serrated leaf margin. 16 to 20 pairs of nerves are formed. The upper side of the leaf is densely downy-haired along the midrib, otherwise sparsely shaggy hairy at first, the underside is densely shaggy hairy along the veins and has axillary whiskers.

The female inflorescences are 3 to 6 inches long with a diameter of about 2 centimeters. The inflorescence axis is about 2 inches long, thin and hairy sparsely downy. The bracts are 0.8 to 1.5 inches long, broad, half-egg-shaped and pointed. The leaves have five veins of the first order and are sparsely shaggy hairy along the veins arranged like a network. The outer leaf margin is closely serrated and without a basal lobe, the inner part is entire with a small, rolled up basal auricle . The fruits are 2 to 3 millimeters long, 1.5 to 2.5 millimeters wide, broadly egg-shaped, sparsely downy-haired and with shaggy hair at the tip, ribbed nuts . Carpinus polyneura flowers from May to June, the fruits ripen from July to September.

Occurrence and location requirements

The natural range is in the Chinese province of Fujian , in the north of Guangdong , in Guizhou , Hubei , Hunan , Jiangxi and Shaanxi , in the northeast of Sichuan and in Zhejiang . The species grows in subtropical forests and thickets at an altitude of 400 to 2300 meters.

Systematics

Carpinus polyneura is a species of the hornbeam genus ( Carpinus ). This is in the family of birch plants of the subfamily (Betulaceae) coryloideae assigned (Coryloideae). The species was first scientifically described in 1899 by Adrien René Franchet . The genus name Carpinus comes from Latin and was already used by the Romans for the hornbeam. The specific epithet polyneura comes from the Greek, means something like "many-nerved" and refers to the veins of the leaves.

One can distinguish between three varieties:

  • Carpinus polyneura var. Polyneura : It occurs in the Chinese provinces of Sichuan and Hunan .
  • Carpinus polyneura var. Sunpanensis (KCHsia) PCLi : It occurs in Sichuan.
  • Carpinus polyneura var. Tsunyihensis (Hu) PCLi : It occurs in the Chinese province of Guizhou .
